On Saturday the23rd of September, Guildfordians travelled to Englefield Green to start of their Surrey 4 campaign against Egham Hallowegians. Guildfordians ran out winners thanks to tries from across the backline, including a hat trick from outside centre Thomas Halsey who put in a man of the match performance. It sets Guildfordians off to a great start in the league, recording their first bonus point win of the season.
Guildfordians got off to the perfect start when Egham’s fly half cleared from the kick off straight to Matt Infante, who went on a 50 yard run and put outside centre Tom Halsey in for his first try. The visitors continued to press throughout the opening exchanges and looked dangerous, particularly when going wide. Guildfordians went on to score twice more in the half, with debutant winger Chris Ondrusz setting up a lovely try out wide for the 2nd. Conversions from Richard Jennings meant the visitors went in 3-19 up.
The 2nd half was a much more closely fought encounter, Guildfordians struck first after a powerful forwards drive was capped off by scrum half Rich Jennings bundling over the line. The game was then put out of reach when a Matt Wells steal inside the Guildfordians 22 ended up with Matt Infante running the length of the pitch. Hallowegians looked the more dangerous in the final 20 minutes, particularly after they went down to 14 men for repeated offside infringements. This allowed Egham to score twice, with some powerful running from their fly half. Lots of positives can be taken from the performance, particularly the free flowing attacking play that coach James Lovell has instilled in the team.
Guildfordians host Mitcham next week at Stoke Park for their first home game.
